two monks – a story of detachment

The below story concerns vairagya, one of the two wings of yoga (the other is abyasa, practice). Vairagya is typically translated as detachment or renunciation. This story is an excerpt from The Heart and Science of Yoga by Leonard Perlmutter. As you read it, notice that it not only demonstrates the importance of intention (the first monk in the story has only honest intentions to assist another human being), but also shows how, in the absence of vairagya, mental confusion and suffering abound.
